A Late Resolution

Part inspired by:

Do you ever find yourself waking up with a burning desire to do something? It could be anything. Reading a particular book, going for a bike ride, climbing a mountain, going out to look at new cars and even sitting to play World of Warcraft. Maybe your not sure yet.

Then, when you start thinking about it, you begin an eager search to find justification. To justify "why " it should take a place in your day. From that second on, the battle is already lost. The 'fire to go' has been drenched in a hurricane.

Now, your point, you ask?

Truth is, I didn't set any new years resolutions. Never been a firm believer that you should wait until the year's end to make change. However, pondering the idea, it is just another (big) opportunity to reflect, so why not take it.

Looking back on my own year has lead me to look at more than just the previous one.

It hit me. As each year comes upon us, the more and more restrictions and boundaries I realise have come into place. Could say, too many for our own good. At least regarding life's activities and possible ventures.

I'm sure that, for some, there is a valid reason to withdraw and say no. Although now I really take a step back, I see no reason why I we (At least I) should really hold myself put and prevent myself taking what the world has to offer.

Caught my drift?

So, all of which can be applied to our game time, I have decided to simply write down just what I feel is important for the year ahead. Not just the year, but from now onwards.

  • Make your own judgements and decisions
  • Find your own balance of work and play. You'll enjoy BOTH more.
  • Don't be soft, or too hard on yourself.
  • Don't be afraid to just have fun and enjoy what you love.
  • Make the most of every day.
  • A start, just something, is a step toward going forward.
  • Going forward, is going somewhere.
  • Be happy, content, with what you have achieved already.
  • You never want to stop accomplishing.
  • Forget perfect, just do and be the best you can.
  • Though be Rational, Reasonable and Realistic. But step outside that box.
  • Be realistic, but don't be afraid to dream.
  • Chase the dream, and don't forget to live the dream.
  • Perfection is what you make it.
  • Stop worrying.
  • Give those around you more leeway, we all have our own struggles other don't see. Bite that pride.
  • Stop and think before you give someone a hard time.
  • Stick by, and be confident with your choices and who you are.
  • But don't be too stubborn and unwelcoming to new ideas.
  • Allow room and embrace change, it's the inevitable.
  • Stop avoiding

If you gotten this far, then if there's anything that I feel most strongly about, it's the following message I've written to myself. Maybe you can take something away from it too:

Don't get lost in the future, the 'destination'. That's not all important. What's important is the journey. Arrival is instant. But a journey, takes time. Time is all we ever truly have. Live in every one of life's moments. Don't autopilot. Don't let the destination, cloud today. But allow the future to drive the present.
Life is made up from journeys. Destinations just make way for them.
Don't always be afraid if you don't know where your headed... just follow your own direction.

Here:

My Challenge to you is to come up with at least one thing you would like to do, experience, start, change and/or achieve this year, and leave it in the comments below.

To the future of today, play it your way.

- Jamin

  1. My goal this year was to try to write neater. My handwriting is atrocious and everyone at work says so, and I've been trying hard to write neater but it's pretty sketchy still!

But blog/WoW wise, my goal was to be more active in the Blog Azeroth community. I am going to try to do more shared topics this year!

Great idea! I for one have always been concious about my handwriting. Was the first kid in infant school to be allowed to write in pen =D

I find taking it slow to begin with and having a good grip helps a lot. Also, if it's important right now - block capitals!

Ah, your doing a great job so far, will be great to bring it to life some more :)

  3. In my personal life my goals for this year is to try to be more positive and hopefully get some stability in my life. I also hope to get to experience a vacation together with my guy for the first time, assuming we can make all the puzzle pieces fit together to make it happen :)

As for the blog, I want to try to get better at commenting again and writing regularly, something that got a bit worse during the latter part of 2011.

That sounds feel cool! Good luck, I'm sure all will work out one way or another :)

Well, just manage it in your own way. There's no pressure to comment and such. Just do what you can!

  5. Commenting is definitely something I'm working on. Outside WoW, I want to start horse riding again and to procrastinate less. I have so many projects almost finished but because they aren't "perfect", I put them to one side. 2012 is going to be the year I stop criticising myself so much, after all, what is perfect anyway.

Your post made me think of this poem Jamin, don't know if you've read it before but it's one of my favourites.

"Always keep Ithaca in your mind.
To arrive there is your ultimate goal.
But do not hurry the voyage at all.
    It is better to let it last for many years;
and to anchor at the island when you are old,
rich with all you have gained on the way,
not expecting that Ithaca will offer you riches."

Ithaca by Cavafy. The whole poem can be found at http://users.hol.gr/~barbanis/cavafy/ithaca.html

Your not the only one with the commenting goal! :)

Ah, horse riding? Sounds fun. Less procrastination is sure a big one for many of us this year.

Also, I see you struggle with perfection the similar way I do. Your right, "what is perfect?" We don't even know ourselves! So go for it!

Very interesting poem, I like it :)

    Thanks for sharing!

  7. Saw your tweet with the video link, thanks I had never seen it before.

In real life and WoW life, like Erinys I'm afraid I'm a procrastinator extraordinaire. Unlike Erinys it's because I'm such a worrier and tend to put off things because of fears of all that could go wrong.

I'm going to try to worry about things AFTER they go wrong, not before! I might find I'm pleasantly surprised, might not have to worry at all!

No problem, hope you liked it.

You just hit the nail on the head! Doing nothing is accepting failure. Failure doesn't mean the end. Just a chance to improve! Everyone encounters it.

    Don't worry, go go :)

  9. Thanks for an inspiring post! WoW-wise you've seen the giant list of doom ;) but outside gaming, I simply made the resolution to do more things that will make me happy. I'm getting a second set of ear piercings this week to start this off :)

  11. My gaming resolution is that if anything starts feeling like work, stop doing that thing and do something fun instead.
As for blogging... we'll see how that pans out when it happens :)

Good luck with your resolutions, Jamin!
